NO GI SESSION #1

although ive been to this class before, im classing this as the first one as im taking it alot more seriously now and will be attending on a weekly basis....

the session starts with a big warmup, followed by some drills from half gaurd.like a darse choke but slightly different, next we tried the same choke from mounted position and also when someone is in your gaurd...

i rolled first of all with the guy i was paired up with during drilling, neither of us submitted,it ended with me in half gaurd.next i rolled with a lad i went to school with called micheal around the same size as me,hes been doing it a fair few years and you could tell!! man was he strong, he tapped me out 3 times, had no answer for him at all...
next i rolled with a bloke called luke, would say he was slightly smaller than me but around the same ability, enjoyed rolling with him, both tapped each other out around three times each.

all in all a good session,is very local to me so ill be keeping it up each week...

BJJ COMP #1 5th BRIGHTON OPEN

well guys, i was a little disapointed with being tapped out in my first fight but what more did i expect?? only had like 5 lessons, the atmosphere was great and really enjoyed competing, the hereford open will be the next competition im gonna enter, gaurenteed two fights there i think...
i pulled gaurd, one leg in butterfly, one out, tried to sweep him straight away which failed.I ended up in his gaurd, he went for a triangle,i caught his foot and flipped him onto his back.BIG mistake by me at this point,i didnt keep all my weight down on him when he turtled,i came off to the side to try and spin round so i could be behind him rather than over his head,i had him in side control,he managed to get half gaurd,he slipped round and nearly took my back.i fought back round to be in his gaurd,he went for a triangle again,i tried doing the same as before and missed! he sunk it in and i had to tap!!

video to follow when i can upload...

WEIGHT

ok at work i weighed myself and was 86.8kg with my clothes on, these scales are alot more accurate so im thinking ill be under 88kg with the gi on.still gonna diet like fuck till saturday tho. today all ive had is one protein shake and a tuna salad, when you know you cant eat why are you ten times more tempted??!!

went for a two mile walk today with some hill work just to stretch my legs really, thats it training wise...

gonna weigh my gi so i can know exactly what i must weigh later on...

BJJ #5 AND WEIGHT

so last night was the last hard session im gonna have before competition on saturday.a real quiet class and i paired up with a bloke who had practiced lutre livre (spelling) in germany for six months.basically no gi jiu jitsu from what he was saying.practiced a load of sweeps, throws and bread slices from different positions.man did i feel weak from all the workouts the days before. My dad never made it, he has really injured his knee hope its nothing serious...

my weight last night on the gym scales was 90kg with gi,must weigh more once its wet tho, weighed at end of class. This morning I weighed 88kg bang on without gi on personal scales. if this is accurate i reckon ill make weight (just!!)

DIETING FOR SATURDAY

i need to lose two kilos by saturday for my weight class (under 88kg) so yesterday all i ate was one tuna salad  pitta (brown) with two protein shakes with water. one in the morning one at night

today ive eaten one banana, a tuna salad brown pitta and a protein shake with water not milk.

ill probably have another tuna salad pitta (brown) after training and another protein shake with water.

ive stopped taking creatine today as it retains water so should help with my weight cut....

BJJ class 4 and weight...

real good session again, massive warm up.we had a load of new brazillian guys in and a guy they called the 'hulk' (definately something the instructor does when theres new members!)

forward rolls, shrimping and back rolls. then we went on to some takedowns, the four stripe white belt i was paired up with was a strong top fighter and said more or less i had the same 'style' as him.As we are both competing next week he showed me some great stuf i can go for straight from a takedown, how best to pass gaurd and a load of other real simple, useful stuff. the more i train the more im realising i need to not use my strength so much and relax alot more.with wrestling it was 100 mile an hour constantly pretty much, this is alot more about timing and how to move. another thing that really surprised me from todays lesson was when a submission is applied properly, how little strength it takes to make someone tap....

after drilling with this guy we had some rolls where we started standing, he is a judo guy and threw me almost intstantly, he tapped me a good 3-5 times in short order, then i was paired up with a brazillian who was literally blowing out his arse and had no gi on, i pulled gaurd, put a choke on and made him tap!! was the first time i made someone tap in class so, even tho he was exhausted at least i knew a technique that i applied right...
we carried on and i tapped him out again this time with an arm bar from full mount.
I then had a roll with 'the hulk' this bloke told me he had trained mostly no gi and with mma guys, he had no gi on he came at me like a bullet.was quite strong but very tense,he lost all power quickly, i pulled gaurd and somehow worked my way round to his back. i tryed to get my arm underneath his chin for a choke but couldnt manage it.a blue belt watching us told me to 'straighten him out',once i did that it was alot easier to get the submission on, got to admit i was real happy with this one!! Another important lesson i took from the blue belt watching was not to cross my feet over when my hooks are in from back mount and showed me why.

even from the first session to now i feel ive come on so much. Cant wait for the next session and to learn more....

Weighed myself during todays session, my gi top was soaked through to be fair but still, i weighed in at 90kg!! couldnt believe it so will need to go very easy on my diet the next week to make weight for saturday.nothing new tho have cut weight alot before when i was boxing.... I need to be 88kg with my gi on

JUDO CLASS NO.1

took my first judo class on thursday night and enjoyed it.can see how it will supplement BJJ and vice versa.the class started with a real basic warm up that i hardly broke sweat doing.followed by sitting back to back and literally having a roll the exact same as BJJ.followed by practicing a load of throws. then came the judo 'sparring' which was awesome.we had two minutes with everyone in the class.my fingers were seriously burnt raw from trying to throw people and have had to tape them up each class since.the only thing which is shite, the class finishes for 6 weeks after next thursday so will have to find another one reasonably local....
                                                                            BEFORE

                                                                           AFTER

the first pic was taken around 6 months ago before i was taking my training seriously....

was 100kg in first photo and am now 86kg, my body fat % is around 20%, want that down to around 10-15% not too worried about the actual weight now...

My BJJ training so far...

so ive had three lessons so far and have enjoyed every session,

SESSION ONE
the first session was two weeks ago and the first thing i noticed, before i even walked in the door actually was how friendly people were.after getting all the mats in we did a MASSIVE warm up which im 99% sure was for my benefit, or the instructors benefit to gauge my fitness.i coped fine with it and when it was over walked off the mats to get a drink 'RIGHT, EVERYONE ON THE FLOOR TEN KNUCKLE PRESS UPS, NO ONE DRINKS UNLESS I SAY YOU CAN DRINK!!' shit, didnt realise that, lesson number one well and truely learnt...'1,2,3,4,5,6' then we all shout out the remainding 4 numbers '7,8,9,10' 'everyone say thanks danny'   oops!!

i had no gi the first couple lessons so i was paired up with a smaller blue belt (im around 88kg).i was shown how to do a triangle and again, what a nice guy, we then went on to a few other drills followed by rolling.i was paired up with the same blue belt and no matter what i did he stayed calm and was the most flexible little dude i think ive ever seen!! absolutely no matter what this little guy ended up in a better position and tapped me out twice. the second roll was again into a blue belt about the same size as me, we went at it real fast paced for the full round neither tapping and mostly with me in side control or in his gaurd.he and the instructor said really well done and well fought out.

SESSION TWO:

went pretty much the same as the first session apart from i was paired up this time with a very strong polish three stripe white belt, he was aggresive in the rolls and look forward to when im at his skill level to keep up!!

SESSION THREE: MY GI HAD BEEN DELIVERED!!

the first two sessions i went to were on a sunday and were fairly quiet, this one was on a friday and was alot busier, first of all we did a warm up.then we had the instructor and another blue belt kneeling next to each other, we had to jump and roll over them. next we all had to lay down top and tail.one by one we had to walk over everybodies stomach, man was i shite at this!!
when we rolled i was paired up with the first small blue belt i rolled with in my first class,we really went at it this time and he caught me in an arm bar which i rolled out of three times, he came at me hard again and accidently i caught him on the end of the nose.we stopped the roll and he was nearly sick from the collision. i felt like a cunt but was assured these things happen. next i rolled witht the second bb from my first class, his name is john and a nice guy.we went at it just as hard as the first time,we ended up he had my feet and i had his feet, somehow i got both my feet locked around his head and made him tap.was chuffed with myself for that for sure.he made me tap a good three times after that...
the third and final roll was with a blue who i hadnt seen or met before, i went in pretty full on holding on to his trousers trying to pass, he just laid back and kept me off easily.after about a minute he told me to stop and listen to him.he explained that i need to SLOW DOWN and stay loose.try and defend and feel my opponent out more.probably the most productive roll ive had to date!

My 'unconventional' gym

so, what do I mean by unconventional??
from working in a health club for the last year ive came to the conclusion I dont like this approach to training AT ALL.
most people like to pay a monthly membership to go into a fancy gym with air con, tv's and cv equipment they can plug their headphones into, sit back and peddle away gazing into space. I think these places lack big time in motivation, interaction (some people come in with their headphones on, head down and dont speak to anyone their entire session!) and are very repititive. At the same time of day on the same treadmill or cross trainer, the same guy going through the EXACT same workout.makes me feel like im stuck in groundhog day at work!! not just that, even the personal training is limited in my opinion,(including myself) we go NOWHERE NEAR into depth enough for the money people pay, yes we use kettlebells, viprs and the TRX but really...its a gimmick.
After researching the internet and reading books I heard about unconventional training, and man did it blow my mind! Hitting tractor tyres with a sledgehammer, smashing battle ropes off the floor, chucking sandbags as high and as far as i can. kettlebells, clubbells, bodyweight exercises like chin ups, dips and so much more. All oldschool but to me this is what training is about. After training for two months now using these techniques the results are incredible, I have taken alot of pictures throughout and will post some up soon once ive got my head around exactly how to work blogger.By no means am I an expert im still learning daily and trying to better myself and family daily, through training, diet and the things we do in a day for our family and friends.
I currently have sourced the tyres I need, have a set of clubbells and have sourced the sand I need for the sandbags. I need to buy alot of things but none of it is expensive, one step at a time ill get there!

Introduction and what my blog is about

hey guys,
this is a place where im going to keep a record of all my training schedule and exact workouts, for anyone thats interested in my approach and for myself really.Ive boxed for 10 years and have had 27 bouts winning well over half. My highest achievement was getting to the home counties schoolboy championship final. Regretibly when i reached 16 all I wanted to do was chase women, drink and party!!
I stopped boxing then, got involved with some things I shouldnt have and generally went off the railes.I was on the run in spain and sweden for around 3 years before I got arrested coming back into this country to see my family.
Getting arrested was the best thing that could of happened to me, after looking over my shoulder for so many years strangely enough it was like a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders.Since that point in my life I have not looked back.Im now currently training to be a personal trainer and trying to set up my own 'unconventional' gym which I will go into more detail a little later on.
I feel fitter than ive ever been right now, am tea total, dont smoke and dont even drink caffeine!!I have two beautiful daughters and a gorgeous fiance. My daughters are 2 years and my youngest is 7 months, training and keeping fit has changed my life so dramatically and still is on a daily basis.Im enjoying the ride and if anybody takes inspiration from my blog or it helps with your training in any way its worth doing...
